The 2008 global financial crisis highlighted the vulnerability of Latin American economies to external events, especially with regard to international trade and financial flows. Although the region has shown some resilience thanks to lower debt and the accumulation of international reserves, important challenges persist, such as the contraction of external financing and dependence on basic products. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of the 2008 crisis in Latin America and explore the strategies that governments and social actors should implement to promote sustainable and autonomous development, taking advantage of local resources and international cooperation. Through a bibliographic review of recent studies, we seek to offer a critical overview of the need to reconfigure public policies that integrate innovation, social equity and environmental sustainability. The most relevant results indicate that community participation and social cohesion are essential to face future crises. In addition, we highlight the crucial role of sociology and other social sciences in understanding the complex interrelations between economic, social and environmental crises in the region. The 2008 crisis underscores the importance of developing long-term policies that strengthen Latin America's capacity to face global challenges, promoting more equitable and sustainable development.
