Teaching the Colombian Constitution in universities: studying current practices and challenges

The teaching of the 1991 Political Constitution of Colombia in Colombian universities promoted civic participation and democratic values. This training enabled citizens to know and exercise their rights and duties. It also emphasised democratic education in all institutions, highlighting the importance of citizenship and respect for constitutional principles to strengthen the social fabric. The purpose of the article was to reflect on the importance of teaching the 1991 Political Constitution of Colombia in universities, highlighting its role in promoting civic participation, democratic values and the formation of citizens aware of their rights and duties. The study adopted an essayistic approach based on the critical review and interpretative analysis of the Constitution and its implementation in the educational sphere. Bibliographical information was used to support the arguments and an in-depth reflection was carried out on the impact of the constitutional text on citizenship education in Colombia. The article analysed how Colombia's 1991 Constitution guaranteed free, quality public education, highlighting recent advances in the quality of higher education. It highlighted the importance of consolidating public policies that strengthen the teaching of the Constitution as a formative axis and promote critical citizenship skills. He also underlined the need for institutional educational projects adapted to the local context, gender equality, and the strengthening of research to promote rights, citizenship and democratic participation.
