Abstract

The increasing rise in urban violence in Ecuador has generated a social climate marked by fear and a constant perception of insecurity, which directly affects the emotional well-being of the population. The literature indicates that such contexts are associated with higher psychological distress and a decrease in subjective well-being and life satisfaction. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between perceived insecurity, experiences of robbery, psychological distress, and life satisfaction among Ecuadorian adults. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational study was conducted with 81 adults residing in different cities across the country. Standardized instruments were used to assess experiences of robbery, perceived insecurity, psychological distress, and life satisfaction. The analyses showed that individuals who had experienced robbery exhibited differences in psychological distress and life satisfaction, whereas the number of robberies suffered, the level of violence involved, and how individuals felt afterward did not show significant differences. These results highlight the importance of considering experiences that affect the immediate environment when analyzing emotional well-being.
